Entry-Level Hydrographer

Gahagan & Bryant Associates, Inc. (GBA) is a unique engineering firm that specializes in providing consulting and engineering services for a variety of projects including, port development, navigation channel design, dredged material management, hydrographic surveying, coastal engineering, and construction management. The firm was established in 1974 by William G. Gahagan and J. Franklin Bryant, two engineers both of whom had complied 20 years of field experience with major dredging firms operating throughout the United States, South America, and the Middle East. GBA is an outgrowth of the Gahagan Overseas Construction Company (later the Gahagan Dredging Corporation), which was a leading international contractor from its origin in 1898.

GBA is headquartered in Tampa, FL with offices located along the east, west and gulf coasts to provide nationwide capabilities.  Our team is comprised of 90+ engineers, surveyors, geologists and support staff.  In 2021, GBA and S.T. Hudson Engineers, Inc. joined forces to create an alliance to provide the marine industry with expanded capacity and expertise to meet increasing demands and more complex projects.  

Position Summary:

GBA is seeking a self-motivated Hydrographic Surveyor with a demonstrated interest in surveying, marine geomatics, or engineering technology to join our team in Baltimore, MD.  Hydrographic surveys will be conducted from vessels up to 45 feet in length.  Data collection will include single beam, multi-beam, side scan sonar and towed arrays including magnetometer and sub-bottom devices. This is an on-site position and relocation to the Baltimore metro area is a requirement.  This position will report to a Senior Hydrographer | Survey Project Manager.  The selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Understand and follow safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Assist the Survey Project Manager in the successful completion of survey projects from start to finish.
  • Participate in hydrographic and geophysical survey projects from inception to completion.
  • Perform hydrographic surveys in support of dredging projects.
  • Collect and process topographic data as referenced to hydrographic applications.
  • Support the maintenance, upkeep, and documentation of the survey vessel and company vehicles in concert with the vessel operator.
  • Ensure accordance with company standards, industry standards and local regulations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team.
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills.

 Required Experience:

  • Degree in surveying, geomatics, engineering technology or closely related discipline from an accredited program. Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).

Preferred Experience:

  • Possession of or ability to sit for Engineer-in-Training (FE) and/or Land Surveying-in-Training (FS) exam a plus.
  • Experience with inland and nearshore hydrographic surveying procedures and data processing techniques to meet or exceed the hydrographic standards as referenced within the Corps of Engineers Hydrographic Survey Manual.
  • Experience with single beam and multi-beam hydrographic data collection and processing.
  • Experience utilizing industry standard hydrographic data collection and post processing software such as: Hypack, Hysweep, Qinsy, Sonarwiz, etc. 
  • Experience utilizing industry standard hydrographic data collection equipment, such as Real-Time Kinematic GPS, single beam echo sounders, multibeam data collection systems, MRUs (including all peripheral devices associated with hydrographic data collection systems).
  • Experience with Autodesk Civil3D highly desired

Travel:

Frequent travel to inland and nearshore areas is required for this position.  Travel can consist of single day survey events (i.e., out, and back in the same day); however, some surveys will require overnight stay when multiple days are required to complete. Rotating shift schedules should be expected on large survey and beach nourishment projects.  Survey rotations will require weekend work.
