PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For over 20 years, GBA has provided technical assistance for key aspects of the widening and deepening and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the 51-mile Houston-Galveston Navigation Channel (HGNC) Project. GBA is the lead design element for the dredging and placement of the dredged materials for the construction of beneficial use habitats and CDF rehabilitation throughout Galveston Bay and Buffalo Bayou.
GBA assisted the Port of Houston Authority and the USACE in developing a technically and economically feasible environmental restoration plan that beneficially uses the dredged material from the HGNC. This plan will eventually develop over 4,600 acres of wetlands, 120 acres of oyster reef mitigation, the restoration of Redfish Reef, Goat Island, the historic San Jacinto shoreline and marsh ridge, creation of an 8-acre bird island, and an offshore fish habitat in Galveston Bay. GBA was instrumental in the coordination of the Limited Reevaluation Report (LRR) that led to the Dredged Material Management Plan (DMMP) and navigation design, Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) authorization, and development of the Project Cooperation Agreement.
